The Puerto Rico Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is hosting the 61st Southeast Regional Meeting of the ACS (SERMACS 2009) on October 21-24, 2009 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The general program includes over 775 presentations, and related activities associated with the event.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

Dr. Roald Hoffmann (Nobel Laureate) The Chemical Imagination at Work in Very Tight Places – Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, USA

Dr. Harry Kroto (Nobel Laureate) Architecture in NanoSpace Florida State University, Florida, USA

The symposia being organized include: Supramolecular science and self-assembly, Current Trends in Nanotechnology, Bioenergy: Fuels, Chemicals, and Power, Current Interdisciplinary Trends in Organic Chemistry, Process Technologies in the Bio-Pharmaceutical Industry, Current Trends in Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry Symposia, Chemistry Education, Chemical Modification in Gene Regulation, Protein Structure and Function, Analytical Chemistry Symposia

 

MEETINGS WITHIN THE MEETING: SAACS Undergraduate Meeting (Graduate School Fair, undergraduate research and poster session, workshops, tours to the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus chemistry department research facilities).

 

HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS PROGRAM:

A full day program will be held on Friday, October 23 at SERMACS 2009 including workshops and conferences addressing innovative way to teach chemistry at high school level.

 

FESTIVAL DE QUÍMICA:

A Presidential National Chemistry Week event, “Festival de Química”, will be held on Friday, October 23 at SERMACS 2009 where student affiliates chapters will receive K-12 students from around the island and make hands-on demonstrations related to 2009 theme “Chemistry it’s elemental”.

 

AAAS-CARIBBEAN DIVISION ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM: 

The AAAS-Caribbean Division will hold its annual symposium on Saturday, October 24 (scientific session, graduate students poster session, teachers and elementary, middle and high school students workshops).
